Fun Facts

Leap Month

The lunar leap month occurs on seventh month and it will only occur once every 4 years.

This thing happens because in the lunar calendar there is only 354 days while the normal calendar we use has 365 days in between each there is a difference of 11 days. So in order to balance the difference. Thus every four years, a leap month will occur ;)

Other than offerings and Getai, the other most popular thing you might see is “ auctioning ”. This programme will start after all the offerings are burnt for the ghosts. Organizers will try their best to find voluntarily host-to-host the auction for the sole purpose of doing charity acts. The things use for auction is usually things that are quite cheap but brings good luck to people. The most common auspicious ornament is the pineapple as in hokkien is “ wang lai ” meaning that prosperity coming towards your way.
The way to make them look m ore auspicious is to coat them with gold paint. By bringing home the things that has been auction, it is equivalent to bringing good luck home. The money that has been forked out by the people will be donated to charity organization.

Getai... does it sound familiar?

Actually Getai is an annual live activity held during the lunar seventh month. It is often a temporary build up stage using wood. It is often built on open ground or in the temple.

Actually the early life of Getai, the singers will sing operas but now it is changed to pop songs to suit the teenagers and attract them to view getai. Normally the performers will dress themselves up in beautiful clothes and together with the live band, they will start “showing off ” their singing ^^. Well the only two-Getai host I know is Lin Ru Ping and the recent newbie in the industry Zheng Ying Ying. The host will normally host the show in Hokkien.

A Getai is build to entertain the ghosts who are out on Earth that month. And normally they will leave 12 spaces in the front row for the ghost to enjoy the show as a form of respect for them. And if there is a leap month meaning two lunar seventh month on that particular year, they will leave 13 seats ^^

The tradition will never forgotten…

Usually when the lunar seventh month arrives, believers and followers will place two candles on any grass patch they can find in front of their house, and then they will place the offerings in front of the candles for the ghost. After every thing is done, they will light 21 joss sticks and pray 3 times as a form of respect. After every thing is done, they will then bring all the offerings to the bin as shown in the picture to burn the offerings for them.

In the olden times, the bin is made up of oil tins where the top part is removed and holes are punched at the side. Nowadays the government provides the bins as they think that by burning the offerings in front of your house is unhygienic and difficult to clean up thus the idea of providing bins =)

Let us share 5 more taboos with you

1.Eat the offerings

The offerings set up by human beings are meant for the ghost to eat. If we touch or eat their food without their consent, we will only bring bad luck to ourselves…

2. Call/ shout names

It is best to call each other with codes when traveling with people outside at night. If we call out the real name, the ghost might remember the name…

3. Turning around unnecessarily at night

If suay suay your name kena called out at night, don’t ever turn back. Because the other that is calling you might not be human …

4. Taking pictures at night

By doing this, the pictures you have taken might have include ghost and you might bring them home with you…

5. Pick up money from the floor (human money or ghost money)

These money are use to buy the favor of the ghost guards. If you take their things without their permission, they might get angry and punish you …

At our last post, we have stopped at the top 5 taboos now lets take a look at the next 5.

6. Swimming...

During this month, where the ghost are allowed to roam freely, they would try their best to find themselves a substitute so that they can be reincarnated. So when you are swimming, they would play a game of leg lifting with you. They would lift up your leg and if you were a little careless, your life might just get carried away…

7. Hanging your clothes out at night...

When your clothes are out at night, the ghosts that are floating around might find your clothes nice and decide to try it on and leave their scent behind…

8. Looking aimlessly...

Ghost tends to hide at a place and scare people. When you look aimlessly and get scared by them, it would be the best time for them to enter your body since your soul has been scared off…

9. Working through the night...

Well youngsters like you and me love to work through the night more for computer games and TV programmes but do you guys know that at the night time the Yang is the weakest and the Yin is at the highest peak doing a compare, which side do you think will win…

10. Placing your slippers’ head facing your bed...

Ghosts have to use the shoe heads to determine where a person is. Unless you want to share a bed with a ghost …

Well after reading all the Taboos does it make you feel scared ? If yes please tagg! Oh yeah if you have done anyone of these taboos during this year's Ghost festival, please remember not to do so for the next festival le ;) Well actually there are ten more taboos anybody interested please tagg we will post for you =)

[ feng ling ]

[ xiao xin wei miao ]

Well when there is a festival, there is bound to have some supersitious beliefs. Right now we would like to share the top ten taboos during the lunar seventh month. Be careful...

1.Hanging wind chimes above one’s bed...

The sounds of the wind chimes attract the attention of the ghost. And when we are sleeping, yang qi is the weakest so it is the best time for them to enter our body… what do you think?

2. Shaving leg hair ...

There is a saying: One ghost is under one strand of leg hair. So if you have more leg hairs on you, no ghost would dare to come near you. What do you think?

3. Putting your hand over people’s shoulder ...

It is believed that everyone has three sets of “ fire ” on us one on the top of our heads the other two each on the shoulders. So if one of the fires is extinguished, ghost will spot us easily and they can possess us more easily especially on the lunar seventh month…

4. Sticking you chopsticks in the middle of your rice….

This looks like sticking the joss stick into the joss stick holder. When the ghosts see this, they would think that you are inviting them to share the food with you … Unless...

5. Leaning against the wall …

There is a saying that ghost and everything in the other world is flat and the things and people in our world is 3 dimensional (3D) meaning that ghosts walk on walls and on normal times they like to rest on the cool wall to rest. So if we rest ourselves on the walls, they might possess us easily …

Well we will share up till here first if not this post will become very de long so if you are still interested , please stay tuned... more coming up meanwhile please tagg okays ?

This is the English Version =)

7th Lunar month (Zhong Yuan Jie) The 7th lunar month had just passed but how much do you know about this special festival celebrated mainly by the Taoist and Buddhist? Let us tell you more about it ^^

Actually it started off as a festival celebrated by the Taoist and Buddhist. But these two religions have different definition towards this festival. Taoism focus on respect towards elders and ancestors while Buddhism focus on Filial piety.

There is a story to it.

It all starts off with a guy call Mu Lian (目连) His story …. The story is actually taken from a Buddhist religion book known as 《大藏经》( da zang jing ). In the book it states that this guy Mu Lian went through all the pains and trouble just to travel to hell to meet his mother (刘氏四娘 ) for a moment. ( *sob* I know very touching ) when he sees that other ghosts bully his mother, he uses a plate to serve the food for his mother, but alas the ghost snatch it. He felt sad and sorry thus went to seek help from Buddha. Buddha is touched by his filial piety and decided to give him some instructions and he must follow them. So on the 15th of the Lunar 7 month, he followed the instructions and gave his offerings to his mother. At last his poor mother get to enjoy the offerings. Thus in remembrance of this filial guy.

The Buddhist and Taoist celebrate this day yearly.

Fun fact: In the olden times the first day of the 7th month is known as “ shang Yuan 上元” the 15th of the month is known as “ zhong Yuan ” And the 30th of the month is known as “ Xia Yuan ”. Surprising isn’t it?

After reading this touching story ( * crying* ) please don’t forget to tag hor ;] your comments are greatly appreciated ^^
